Numly Back in Beta

Numly is following the same path as many of the other Web 2.0 start-ups. Enhancements are being introduced almost on a daily basis - no release schedules here. With this level of development, we thought that it was only fair to put the site back into beta and ask for your continued patience with our enhancements and feedback.

We appreciate your support. Join the (R)evolution and (C)opyright your work with Numly!

Link Rel=Copyright Tag

Did you know that there is a copyright tag in the HTML? The Link tag can be used to establish copyright as well as stylesheet and RSS feed usage. The link tag resides inside the head tags of the page and its usage is:

<link rel="copyright" title="Copyright Lincese" href="...url..." >

To exploit the full power of this tag, you can use the Numly verification link as the URL of your copyright license in the href attribute. Below is an example of how Numly.com uses the link copyright tag in its website:

<LINK REL="COPYRIGHT" TITLE="Copyright License" HREF="http://verify.numly.com/27200-060121-189140-97" >

As you can imagine, the Numly.com website has its copyright registered with Numly and was assigned 27200-060121-189140-97 for its Numly Number. Numly has a free verification service that allows you to verify the work and its author and its copyright license by simply including the following link:

http://verify.numly.com/esn where esn is your registered Numly Number.

Numly supports the following licenses:

All Rights Reserved
Creative Commons - Attribution 2.5
Creative Commons - Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5
Creative Commons - Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5
Creative Commons - Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5
Creative Commons - Attribution-NoDerivs 2.5
Creative Commons - Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5
Creative Commons - Public Domain

Copyright Power to the People!

Have you heard about the Small Claims Court proposal for copyrights? Check out Plagiarism Today's and William Patry's recent blogs for more details. The basic idea is that you could handle most personal copyright infrigement cases of a smaller dollar amount in a small claims court.

Perhaps a Numly registration is all that would be needed to prove your copyright claim submission date. We would like to think so but we will need to wait to see how this proposal shakes out.

Numly Widget Supports Creative Commons

Numly, a Web 2.0 startup focused on Copyright 2.0 solutions, has just released version 1.2 of its Apple OSX Widget. In addition to the mark submission as private flag and the optional barcode and rating system features, Numly has added support for Creative Commons licenses.

Until recently, Numly has only supported the All Rights Reserved copyright license. Now you can select from a list of 7 Creative Commons licenses including Public Domain. A list of the supported Creative Commons licenses can be found at http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/meet-the-licenses

Currently Creative Commons support of Numly Numbers is available through the Numly.com web portal and the Apple Widget. Changes to our Firefox extension have also been made but are pending Mozilla approval. A beta version of our WordPress plug-in with Creative Commons support is also available at the following link: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/69426?replies=1#post-365406

Upon registration of your content with Numly, you will receive an official Numly Number for your content to prove your copyright claim along with all of the necessary HTML code to display your Numly Number and Creative Commons (or All Rights Reserved) licenses in your work. The Numly code contains a tracking mechanism that allows you to see all IP addresses and companies that have viewed your content online as well as an optional barcode and approval ratings.

Numly's Copyright 2.0 Blog

Numly has given its blog an easy name to remember, Copyright 2.0.

We believe that publishing and copyrights and DRM that exist today will change for the better in the near future. Slow media companies and paper-based government agencies won't be able to keep up with the mass population moving to digital media and the social-based applications that web 2.0 companies are bringing to the network on a daily basis.

Copyright 2.0 enhancements should include:

- Real-time and online registration solutions
- Trackable and verifiable copyright identifiers
- Online access to copyright libraries and content owner lookup
- Support of microformats
- Support for both All Rights Reserved and Creative Commons
- Support of new Web 2.0 mediums and concepts such as tagging
- Support of all digital media formats

Numly is working hard to secure this functionality for the growing population of content creators. Please visit our site at http://numly.com.

Numly Supports Orphaned Works Proposal

Have you heard about the Orphaned Works proposal being proposed throught the Copyright Office? Orphaned Works are content (documents, images, songs, art, etc.) where the original copyright holder can no longer be located.

Jonathan Bailey from Plagiarism Today does an excellent job in covering this proposal in a series of blog postings starting with http://www.plagiarismtoday.com/?p=214. As Jonathan points out, Numly is uniquely positioned as a "caretaker" in facilitating the research role in the Orphaned Works proposal.

Digital works can be uploaded to Numly along with meta data about the author and copyright in return for a Numly Number. A digital fingerprint of the digital asset is created and stored in the Numly databases. If you find an image online (or any other digital document), you can determine if it has been registered at Numly and who the author/artist is via the Numly Document Validator in the Numly portal. By simply uploading the digital asset in question, Numly will return the associated Numly Number of the work along with all of the copyright meta data and a contact link. The contact link uses Numly's Secure Message Center to forward your message to the copyright holder (even if their email address has changed).

This new feature should make finding the copyright holders of orphaned works possible! Let us know what you think!

Numly Microformats?

I am fascinated with the idea of Numly playing a role in the microformats movement. I would like start a discussion on how Numly can play a role in this effort. One idea provided by Hin-ching could be adding the Numly Number to the content of your blog or HTML content as a meta tag such as:

< META scheme="Numly" name="identifier" content="56212-060406-479256-26" >

Perhaps Numly, formerly ESBN.ORG, could help with splogging and microchunking? Since the content and digital fingerprints of the content are stored on Numly, the authenticity of the content could be verified at any time.
