Numly Assigns 10,000th ESN

Numly, the next generation copyright and digital rights licensing service issued its 10,000th Numly Number this weekend. This demonstrates that the market is ready for a third-party, non-governmental form of universal electronic serial number or ESN assignment for copyrights.

The Web 2.0 movement and volume of content being created by individuals is a sign that this market is growing quickly. Numly continues to prove that it can scale to meet demand and deliver on quality services.

Professional Authors Use Numly

Many authors either copyright one chapter at a time or versions of their work on a daily or weekly basis. Each registration will generate a new Numly Number and time stamp for tracking purposes. Some authors wait till the end and copyright the entire book at once. Publishing houses like to register each sale of their book with a Numly Number to track licensing information for the consumer.

There are two ways to register your works with Numly. One is the copy and paste method and one is an actual upload with digital fingerprinting of your works with orphan works protection. The copy and paste method has a poorly worded label that says blog but it really means any text (up to 5,000 characters for Amateur accounts - or unlimited text for Professional accounts). The second method of uploading text is only available to Professional authors.

Amateur accounts also only have a maximum of 3 free Numly Number registrations per month where as Professional accounts support 100 Numly Numbers per month. For more information on upgrading to a professional account, please click on the following link: http://numly.com/numly/upgrade.asp

For $4.95 per month the upgrade is a great value!

Numly Professionals Get Bigger Posts!

Numly, the Web 2.0 copyright and digital rights assignment service, has removed its 5,000 character limit on blog posts for Professional authors. "This has been a common request by featured authors and I am glad that we could once again add value to our services," says Chris Matthieu, founder and CEO of Numly. This extension supports both our All Rights Reserved and Creative Commons licensing offerings. This enhancement also exists on Docly, our Web 2.0 word processor or our Write with Rights platform as we like to call it.

Amateur accounts will still only be able to post a maximum of 5,000 characters.

Contracts On-The-Fly!

I am sure that this blog posting title will make even the most lenient lawyers shriek and run out of the room like their hair was on fire.

I am merely trying to show off the power of Numly Numbers and the associated Numly applications including Docly and Sigly. As most of you know already, Docly is a Web 2.0 online word processor with one main distinction - you can publish your writings and receive Numly Numbers automatically embedded into your Docly Document.

New to Numly is Sigly, our e-signature service. Sigly requires no registration - only a Numly Number and a list of email addresses of the signers required to execute the document.

The Numly Number can be any Numly Number assigned to any digital work (including an audio file) but most commonly a legal contract. You could simply use the Numly Number assigned via Docly as part of your publishing exercise. Enter this number into Sigly along with the signer email addresses and Sigly will send an email to your signers inviting them to click on a link to sign the drafted agreement. The e-signature requester receives an email as each person signs. It's that simple.

So what's the case study? Well, in this example your team could be taking minutes from a meeting or writing up a business requirements document in Docly. The document gets published (publicly or privately) and Sigly signature requests are sent out looking for the team's (or your customer's) signature. Now that's efficient!

Let us know how you are using Docly or Sigly!

Docly Word Processor Gets a Facelift

Docly, the Web 2.0 online word processor with copyright protection, gets a new dreamy look! Check it out at http://docly.com

Docly allows authors to draft documents online using an online word processor. Upon final review of a document, the author may publish their digital work online and share it with others or sell it. Numly Numbers are automatically assigned to published works and embedded into the footer of the document with the appropriate copyright notice and verification of authenticity links. Copyrights supported by Numly include: All Rights Reserved, Creative Commons, and Public Domain.

Authors also receive a personal web site to show off their published works (docly.com/username). As copies or sales of digital works are authorized by the author, additional Numly Numbers are generated with the licensee information and copyright assigned to buyer. Numly tracks all rights assignments and traffic destined to derivative or assigned works by simply including the Numly Number in the Docly Document.

Additional Web 2.0 features include: tagging, buddy icons, blog-like commenting and reviews, rating, and RSS document feeds. Docly also supports single sign-on with all of Numly's services.

About Numly:
Numly assigns Numly Numbers (Electronic Serial Numbers / ESNs) for all things digital. These unique identifiers provide digital rights assignment capabilities as well as third-party, non-repudiation measures for proof of copyright via real-time verifications. Numly Numbers are simple to generate and act as an electronic timestamp. They also allow you to track who is viewing your content and when it is accessed, monitor ratings, and can be used as permalinks!

Join the (R)evolution and (C)opyright your work with (N)umly today!

Sigly: No User Account Required

Sigly, the newest Web 2.0 electronic signature offering from Numly, does not require the creation of user accounts to request a signature or to sign a document.

The requester simply needs to have a Numly Number already registered with Numly. Emails are sent to signers with hashed keys ids to link signatures to documents. Status lookups are also based on Numly Numbers rather than user accounts. Not worrying about sign-in or sign-ups allows you to request a signature in less than 3 minutes and actually sign a document in less than 1 minute.

APIs are also available to integrate Sigly Signatures or Numly Numbers into your existing applications. Contact us today for assistance.

Ruby on Rails

Sigly makes Numly's 3rd commercial Ruby on Rails application (after Vouchor and Chug'd). Sigly's purpose is to create a standard method for legally collecting e-signatures online. Using Numly's time stamping and verification services and Vouchor's identity 2.0 services as an optional measure of additional proof, Sigly can produce a non-reputable electronic signature service online.

Being a Microsoft developer for years, I truly appreciate the power and simplicity of both Ruby and Rails. Thanks 37 Signals! I would also like to thank our RoR hosting partner, SteelPixel. You guys rock!
