Numly Reaches 1,500 Authors/Artists

Numly, the Web 2.0 copyrighting service, has just registered it's 1,500th member! Not bad for an unfunded startup battling the big guys.

Numly started out as ESBN.ORG in December 2005 and was forced to change its name by RR Bowker (the ISBN.ORG folks) shortly thereafter. Bowker claimed possible trademark infringements of the ISBN.ORG moniker but could not cite any actual instances. Rather than fight the 800 pound gorilla, we changed our name to Numly.

I believe that everything happens for a reason. Numly is a better web 2.0-sounding name and I believe that it differentiates us from Bowker. Numly is more than an enumerator. We assign numbers for each copy of a digital work rather than a number per title. We also timestamp copyright submissions and include digital signatures in our database of each digital work to protect authors/artists against orphan works. This allows us to trace a digital work back to the appropriate copyright holder.

We have also recently launched Docly, a web 2.0 self-publishing site for authors. Submissions generated through Docly automatically bare Numly Numbers with copyright registration as well as social bookmarks and ratings. Authors can also decide whether to share or charge for the viewing of their works. Check out the cool new buddy icons and RSS added to Docly. We'll probably see some of the newer functions on Docly transfer back over to Numly especially since both sites share the same login credentials.

Numly also launched Bookfob several months ago. BookFob allows you to store electronic books (e-books) on a memory stick that can be attached to your key chain. This memory stick can be plugged into any Windows PC to access your book at any time and anywhere. There is no software to install because our user-friendly e-book reader also resides on the BookFob. Best of all, your content is protected from copy/paste, printing, and distribution.

I would like to thank everyone who has provided feedback and enhancement requests to our services. It's because of members like you that Numly, Docly, and Bookfob are what they are today.

Thank You!

Numly To Make Changes To Member Offerings

Numly caters to amateur and professional authors and artists and large enterprises such as publishers, universities, and law firms. We offer three plans to give you the flexibility that you need for the peace of your creative mind and business dealings.

On August 1st, Numly will be making changes to its member categories. We will be decreasing the number of free Numly Numbers provided to Amatuers to three per month with no uploads.

The Professional version will no longer be offered on a month-to-month basis. The Professional Numly account will now offered annually for $59.95 per year this will include 100 numly numbers per month and 5MB per upload. Each upload counts as a Numly Number. The first 30 new annual Professional account upgrades will receive a free Numly t-shirt! Existing Professional members will continue to be billed monthly under current agreements.

Our Enterprise solution will be offered at $1,199.95 annually and will include 1000 Numly Numbers per month with 100MB per file uploads. Again each upload will count towards your monthly amount of alloted Numly Numbers.

With U.S. copyright filing costs increasing to $45 per copyright, we believe that Numly is a better value!

Numly.com assigns Numly Numbers (Electronic Serial Numbers / ESNs) for all things digital. These unique identifiers provide digital rights management capabilities as well as third-party, non-repudiation measures for proof of copyright via real-time verifications. Numly Numbers are simple to generate and act as an electronic timestamp. They also allow you to track who is viewing your content and when it is accessed, monitor ratings, and can be used as permalinks!

Numly Author of the Week Goes to...

Docly is Alive!

As typical launches go, Docly's was fairly smooth. We ran into IE caching issues and
had to rework the Numly/Docly SSO (single sign-on). We also ran into a few complaints about the original word processing editor and had to make adjustments - once again on the fly. Those pesky apostrophes included in content also caused initial SQL problems on draft documents and published works. All of these bugs appear to have been exterminated!

Users can now go from Numly to Docly or Docly to Numly and draft and publish documents or manage their Numly Numbers.

I would like to thank everyone who assisted in bug detection and testing with us over the past two days. Y'all rock!

Docly Launches on Independence Day!

In observance of Independence Day, Docly.com launches promoting freedom of speech and freedom from publishers.

Docly (http://docly.com), the new Web 2.0 self-publishing service from Numly (http://numly.com), allows authors to draft documents online using an online word processor. Upon final review of a document, the author may publish their digital work online and share it with others or sell it. Numly Numbers are automatically assigned to published works and embedded into the footer of the document with the appropriate copyright notice and verification of authenticity links. Copyrights supported include: All Rights Reserved, Creative Commons, and Public Domain.

Think of Docly as Flickr for documents mashed with Writely word processing and Lulu self publishing - plus you get all of the copyright protection and content metrics of Numly Numbers automatically.

NOTE: Your Numly user id and password works on both Numly and Docly sites! Additional Docly web 2.0 features include: tagging, buddy icons, blog-like commenting, rating, and RSS.
