How to Establish Copyright Proof?

The moment you write a document or compose a song or draw a picture, it is considered copyrighted. How do you prove that you have created this document first and thus own the copyright?

You could file every digital work with copyright.gov at $45 per submission and wait several months for approval or you can submit the work to Numly and instantly receive proof of submission with verification capabilities.

How does it work? Your digital works (e-book, podcast, video, image, blog, website, etc.) are uploaded to Numly along with meta data about your content. The works are digitally fingerprinted to help protect you from orphaned works and a Numly Number along with additional HTML code is returned for you to include in your content. This HTML code provides viewership and usage tracking, copyright verification services, and an optional barcode and rating system solution.

Did you know that Numly supports both All Rights Reserved and Creative Commons’ licenses? The license type is specified at the time of registration. To learn more about how to create a Numly Number, click here!

Docly - How Tos

Docly, the Web 2.0 online word processor with copyright protection, automatically assigns copyrights (both All Rights Reserved and Creative Commons) licenses to all published Docly Documents. Copyright licensing is provided through Numly and the Numly Number (ESN) is automatically embedded into the Docly Document. All Numly Numbers (including: Docly Documents and Tagly Tags) are tracked in your Numly account under the Manage ESN link in the web portal.

Access fees can be set on Docly Documents at the time of publication. Prices and copyright and meta information can be changed at any time by signing into your Docly account and clicking on the edit meta link. Docly tracks all documents that you have purchased to date allowing you to access them any time via the library in your Docly account.

Digital Rights Assignment

Digital music publishing services (such as Apple's iTunes) should consider using Numly.com's Digital Rights Assignment (DRA) services rather than continuing to punish consumers with Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions.

Unlike DRM, DRA is not restrictive. It simply "assigns" a license number (Numly Number) to a copy of digital music and associates the number with the licensee's name and/or membership details. The end result is a trackable MP3 or AAC or whatever format without DRM.

If the copy is reported stolen, it can be tracked to the rightful owner. Sounds simple enough - right? This methodology can also be used on video, ebooks, etc.

How to Register an Electronic Serial Number

It's simple! Goto Numly.com, sign-in (registration is free), click on the Generate ESN (Electronic Serial Number) link, fill out the meta data and hit submit. You will receive an ESN immediately as well as an email verifying its issuance.

Most people seem to be using these Numly Numbers as proof of copyright submission of digital assets via the creation time stamp or as digital rights assignments since you can specify a "license" and "licensee". While others are using Tagly.com. Our Tagly service provides a simple interface and inventory system for tagging real-world items with Numly Numbers or Tagly Tags as we like to refer to them as. These Tagly Tag ESNs can be printed on property control tags the stick to the item or inventories can be downloaded for your records.

Tell us what problems you are solving with your Numly Numbers!

Vouchor Single Sign On

Do you need to prove your real identity online? Vouchor is an identity 2.0 service offered by Numly, inc. that verifies that you are who you say you are. Once your identity is vouched, you can begin using your Vouchor credentials to sign into Vouchor friendly sites.

Attention web developers: All you need to do to support Vouchor's Single Sign On (SSO) is ask for your members vouchorid and password and call the following Vouchor API

http://vouchor.com/vouchor/sso?vouchorid=1234567890&password=abcdef

Vouchor simply returns a true or a false on the member's vouchor credentials. If the response is true, let them into your site. If not, return them to your login page.

To learn more about someone's identity, simply direct your browser to http://vouchor.com/vouchor/verify and enter their vouchor id into the form. Vouchor will return the member's dob, gender, address, and vouched email addresses. We have recently added tags and karma to vouchor as well allowing any vouched member to rate and comment on another vouched member.

Some ideas of usefulness include ebay or craigslist postings, dating sites, etc.

Numly Digital Fingerprints Enhanced

Numly, the Web 2.0 copyright and digital asset licensing service, has made a substantial enhancement to its digital fingerprinting services for uploaded digital assets. Such uploaded assets typically include: ebooks, images, art, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, music, video, source code, and web sites/pages.

Performance enhancements are nearly 10 times faster than our previous digital fingerprinting routine. Because of this performance enhancement, we have increased our digital upload services from .5MB files to 5MB files for all Professional accounts. This change is effective immediately!

Happy New Year Numlers!

The folks at Numly would like to wish all Numlers a Happy New Year! Your support has been amazing! This Christmas break marked our 1 year concept anniversary. We introduced our service to the market as a beta under the ESBN.ORG brand with the concept of Electronic Book Serial Numbers. After a few rounds of cease and desist notices from the ISBN folks, we were forced to change our name and incorporate in April of 2006.

Chris Matthieu, Numly's Founder, was interviewed this year by two podcast shows (the Web 2.0 Show and the Geekinator). We were also mentioned on other podcasts including: TWIT, CNet's Buzz Outloud, and ITToolbox's Information Security Investigator.

We have earned support from Jonathan Bailey of Plagiarism Today and Larry Lessig of Creative Commons. ESBN.ORG was also listed on Dion Hinchcliffe's Most Promising Web 2.0 Software List as being a company to watch in 2006.

In addition to our Numly copryrighting service, we introduced 5 other web applications as tools for our audience:

Vouchor - Identity 2.0 service for proving one's identity online
Tagly - Assign ESNs to physical property such as property control tags
Docly - Online word processor with copyright support and self publishing, e-commerce tools
Raply - Online group chat for any web page
Tably - Online sticky notes for any web page

Today we have nearly 8,500 Numly Numbers assigned and over 2,000 registered members! Not bad for a $0 marketing budget, huh? This growth tells us that our services are valued by authors and artists - YOU. That is thanks enough. Your support is greatly appreciated.

You can expect more innovations and enhancements in 2007. We promise!

Happy New Year!
Numly
