Tom, Molly, and Veronica have been talking about an email from someone named Jonathan for several episodes now regarding a concept called "simple DRM". The proposal is for movie studios and record companies to create a unique serial number for every copy of digial movie or song sold. The serial number would link back to a database where the owner (licensee) of the digital work could be identified. The distributor would then either watermark or encrypt the digital asset with this number.

For those of you that register Numly Numbers on a regular basis realize that this is exactly what Numly does for individuals and companies alike. Since we were discussed on C/Net's podcast about 6 months ago, I couldn't sit idle any longer with this discussion underway. I called in and reminder the Buzz Crew and they remembered us. They also thought agreed that our simple DRM solution would solve the industry's problem if only the movie studios and record companies knew about us. Maybe someone hear their podcast and come to our rescue.

All Numly Properties Use Single Sign On

Numly, the next generation copyright service, supports single sign on (SSO) with all of its properties including: Numly, Docly, Tagly, and Raply. This means that once you register for one of these web 2.0 services, you are registered for all of them and you can use your existing user credentials to sign directly into any of these services or click on the links within one to get to the other!

Numly Numbers can be verified online by going to http://verify.numly.com/esn (obviously you need to replace esn with the Numly Number in question).

Search Copyrights Online

Numly, the copyright 2.0 registrar, opens it's copyright search tool to the public! Now anyone can search for copyrighted content directly from the numly.com home page. The search tool supports both All Rights Reserved and Creative Commons licensed content.

Search results are returned with a link to the author's registered content, a link to the Numly Number verification page, and a link to the author's n-page. The registration timestamp is also prominently displayed on the listing.

Docly Enhanced to Support Raply Chat

Docly, the online word processor with Numly Number copyrights, has been enhanced to now offer Raply group chat throughout the site.

Now Docly and Numly members can communicate while reading published documents on Docly. A Raply logo has been added to the top of the Docly page near the google translation links and to each Docly Document view page so that readers can communicate on specific Docly Documents of interest.

The Docly author pages have also been enhanced to support Raply chat allowing authors to communicate with their readers directly from their Docly home pages such as Docly.com/chris

Tagly Labels

Tagly, Numly's new Web 2.0 real-world tagging service, has just been given an export tags feature. This feature provides a CSV (comma seperated values) file that can be downloaded to allow you to generate your own property control labels.

We hope to have really cool Tagly labels available to purchase soon. At least there's an export feature until then. Notice the beta tag hanging from the logo :)

Numly Launches Tagly Tagging Service!

The engineers at Numly have been busy this weekend. In addition to launching Raply on Saturday, we are now launching Tagly. Numly Number Barcode Software

It's amazing what you can find on Google. Tonight I was doing a little Numly vanity surfing and noticed a barcode software application from NeoDynamic that claims to support Numly Number barcodes. I'm not sure what they would buy anyone since the Numly Number must be generated by Numly and our barcodes are free with every ESN number.

DRM *IS NOT* Digital Restriction Management

Numly, the Web 2.0 copyright service, assigns Numly Numbers to original digital content for authors and artists to establish copyrights. You probably knew this but did you know that Numly Numbers can be used as DRM?

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management although with all of the bad press around DRM these days most people probably believe that DRM is short for Digital Restriction Management.

In addition to assigning Numly Numbers to original digital works, Numly Numbers can be assigned for each copy of digital work sold, downloaded, or distributed. Each new Numly Number can reference the parent Numly Number assigned to the original work and it can retain new meta data such as the licensee's name and email address, copyright assigned to the licensee, which can be different than the parent copyright, and the timestamp of the Numly Number assignment.

This is DRM in its simplest form as it was originally intended with no restrictions. With Numly, copyright holders can assign and track rights to their works without jeopardizing the quality of their media or restricting consumers' rights.
