Site UI Improvements

You may have noticed that the Numly site may look a little cleaner that normal. We've been brushing up on our CSS skills and made a few long needed corrections to the UI (both on the public site and in the portal).

Docly also received a redesign taking its layout back to the original launch design.

We have a revived interest in making the site more usable. Thanks for your patience over the years and now as more changes continue to be rolled out.

Professional Authors Use Numly

Many authors either copyright one chapter at a time or versions of their work on a daily or weekly basis. Each registration will generate a new Numly Number and time stamp for tracking purposes. Some authors wait till the end and copyright the entire book at once. Publishing houses like to register each sale of their book with a Numly Number to track licensing information for the consumer.

There are two ways to register your works with Numly. One is the copy and paste method and one is an actual upload with digital fingerprinting of your works with orphan works protection. The copy and paste method has a poorly worded label that says blog but it really means any text (up to 5,000 characters for Amateur accounts - or unlimited text for Professional accounts). The second method of uploading text is only available to Professional authors.

I am sure that this blog posting title will make even the most lenient lawyers shriek and run out of the room like their hair was on fire.

I am merely trying to show off the power of Numly Numbers and the associated Numly applications including Docly and Sigly. As most of you know already, Docly is a Web 2.0 online word processor with one main distinction - you can publish your writings and receive Numly Numbers automatically embedded into your Docly Document.

New to Numly is Sigly, our e-signature service. Sigly requires no registration - only a Numly Number and a list of email addresses of the signers required to execute the document.

The Numly Number can be any Numly Number assigned to any digital work (including an audio file) but most commonly a legal contract. You could simply use the Numly Number assigned via Docly as part of your publishing exercise. Enter this number into Sigly along with the signer email addresses and Sigly will send an email to your signers inviting them to click on a link to sign the drafted agreement. The e-signature requester receives an email as each person signs. It's that simple.

So what's the case study? Well, in this example your team could be taking minutes from a meeting or writing up a business requirements document in Docly. The document gets published (publicly or privately) and Sigly signature requests are sent out looking for the team's (or your customer's) signature. Now that's efficient!

Digital Rights Assignment

The folks at Numly would like to wish all Numlers a Happy New Year! Your support has been amazing! This Christmas break marked our 1 year concept anniversary. Vouchor, Numly's Identity 2.0 service, was recently enhanced to support Reputation 2.0 functionality! Reputation 2.0 features now include:

- Tagging
- Rating
- Reviews/Comments

Now Vouchors can add tags to their profile that better represent their identity. These tags can be searched by members and non-members via a tagcloud. Vouchors can be contacted via email through vouchor.com without the searcher needing to know their email address.

Another important feature to Vouchor's new Reputation 2.0 solution is the ability for other Vouchors to rate and review a Vouchor's reputation online. This reputation is transparent and will allow a Vouchor to build a real-world and open reputation online.

Vouchor.com is a community-based online identity verification service. Once an Internet user becomes vouched, the Vouchor API can be used to certify its members identity. This becomes important when the verification of an Internet identity is necessary to an individual rather than a user id or login. Vouchor aims to verify the identities of Internet users through face-to-face witnessing of government issued photo identification documents. Email addresses are also certified in the vouching process.

Tably - Call For Features...

Tably, Numly's Web 2.0 site sticky tab, is making a feature request call. Currently you can add sticky notes to any website/page, mark note as public or private, and subscribe to notes via RSS feeds. Single sign on is also supported via your Numly/Docly/Tagly accounts. You can also apply your photo to your posted notes by updating your Numly account photo.

Some suggested new features include: search capabilities of notes and RSS by site/page.

Since the site tab is already built, it could easily be extended to support other features besides notes such as reminders, chat, etc. These are the suggestions that we are most interested in receiving.

Tably Sticky Notes Enhancement

Tably, the Web 2.0 sticky notepad, has been enhanced to support private notes and the ability to show all web notes by user.

In order to use the mark note as private feature, you must be logged into Tably. Once logged in the mark private checkbox appears. Notes are defaulted to public unless specified as private notes.

Once logged in you will also see that a new feature has been added to the Tably tab with a link to Show All. This link will allow you to browse or search through your public and private notes by site url.

Numly now supports social networking based author photos and search functionality. You can page through the thousands of registered authors or search for specific ones. Once you find the author that you are interested in reading their works, you can click on their photo and go to their Numly home page. There you will find all of their Numly registered public works. New Numly Features

Regular Numly copyrighters probably noticed a new copyright search feature on the home page this week. Content can be searched under All Rights Reserved and Creative Commons licenses or both. Now when you select the Creative Commons license to search, a new drop down box appears that allows you to further specify the type of CC license to find that matches your search criteria.

I wish that I would have come up with this idea on my own but I cannot take credit for it. Mike Linksvayer, the CTO of Creative Commons, suggested this feature. Thanks Mike!

Another enhancement made to the Numly search feature is the ability to simply explore new public Numly Number submissions. Click on the Explore link above the search box and you will receive a results page with Numly Number registrations listed in the order of newest to oldest as submitted to Numly. This listing also denotes the ARR or CC license designation on the left of each registration. Note: you can click on the n-page link to see more registered works from the same author.

Tom, Molly, and Veronica have been talking about an email from someone named Jonathan for several episodes now regarding a concept called "simple DRM". The proposal is for movie studios and record companies to create a unique serial number for every copy of digial movie or song sold. The serial number would link back to a database where the owner (licensee) of the digital work could be identified. The distributor would then either watermark or encrypt the digital asset with this number.

For those of you that register Numly Numbers on a regular basis realize that this is exactly what Numly does for individuals and companies alike. Since we were discussed on C/Net's podcast about 6 months ago, I couldn't sit idle any longer with this discussion underway. I called in and reminder the Buzz Crew and they remembered us. They also thought agreed that our simple DRM solution would solve the industry's problem if only the movie studios and record companies knew about us. Maybe someone hear their podcast and come to our rescue.

Tagly Labels

It's amazing what you can find on Google. Tonight I was doing a little Numly vanity surfing and noticed a barcode software application from NeoDynamic that claims to support Numly Number barcodes. I'm not sure what they would buy anyone since the Numly Number must be generated by Numly and our barcodes are free with every ESN number.

DRM IS NOT Digital Restriction Management

Numly, the Web 2.0 copyright service, assigns Numly Numbers to original digital content for authors and artists to establish copyrights. You probably knew this but did you know that Numly Numbers can be used as DRM?

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management although with all of the bad press around DRM these days most people probably believe that DRM is short for Digital Restriction Management.

In addition to assigning Numly Numbers to original digital works, Numly Numbers can be assigned for each copy of digital work sold, downloaded, or distributed. Each new Numly Number can reference the parent Numly Number assigned to the original work and it can retain new meta data such as the licensee's name and email address, copyright assigned to the licensee, which can be different than the parent copyright, and the timestamp of the Numly Number assignment.

This is DRM in its simplest form as it was originally intended with no restrictions. With Numly, copyright holders can assign and track rights to their works without jeopardizing the quality of their media or restricting consumers' rights.

Vouchor: Ruby on Rails!

Vouchor is Numly's first Web 2.0 application written entirely on Ruby on Rails (RoR).

Moving to Linux, Lighttpd, and MySQL were big steps for this Microsoft developer but I can honestly say that Vouchor was one of my favorite development projects. RoR takes a little getting used to (coming from ASP and .NET) but once you get the hang of it, the coding can be very quick and enjoyable. No more low-level SQL database routines and connection strings to worry about with RoR. Like magic, it just works! I was also able to take advantage of my Mac Powerbook as a development workstation and even deployed a Linux server at home for testing running on Mongrel.

Finding a new hosting company that supported RoR was also an interesting experience. Luckily I listen to Josh Owen and Chris Sailor's Web 2.0 Show and remembered hearing that they run a hosting business called Steel Pixel. After reviewing their site and service plans, I sent them an email with nearly 10 questions about their offering. They replied in less than an hour and answered all of my questions with much detail. I initially signed a one-month agreement with Steel Pixel to test the waters (so to speak) but after Josh came to my aid over 10 times patiently answering my silly nuby RoR deployment questions regarding SVN and Capistrano I confirmed my early decision. These guys rock! They are very knowledgeable on hosting RoR applications and their level of service is phenomenal. The other RoR hosting companies should aspire to be as good as Steel Pixel!

Okay - I guess you can tell that I am excited about Vouchor and Ruby on Rails and Steel Pixel. You can expect more innovative RoR applications and new services from Numly in the near future!

Numly's Vouchor service consists of an international community of vouchors rather than a governmental agency charged with verifying web user identities. Numly has just now launched its Vouchor.com identity 2.0 service for the purpose of certifying identities required for copyright registrations among other things.

The Internet was founded on anonymity. This works perfectly fine for most web transactions but certain transactions require proof of your identity. Examples of these types of transactions include: voting solutions and governmental registrations. This is the case with Numly and its copyright filings.

Numly allows authors and artists to register their digital works as copyrights. Numly serves as a source of non-repudiation verifying that certain works were submitted by certain user ids at certain times. Create an ESN per Digital Copy

Numly Numbers can be used for more than just copyright proof and verification. They can also be used as digital identifiers of copies of a digital work such as a licensed copy of an e-book or presentation or song. Even better, each Numly Number assigned to a copy of a digital work can identify the owner of the copy of work and the type of copyright license assigned to the digital copy of work.

You can think of Numly Numbers as next generation ISBN numbers. Rather than assigning an ISBN to your digital work where each copy has the same ISBN number, try assigning a Numly Number to each copy of your digital work sold or distributed. This will give you tracking capabilities of your works and licenses as well as a vehicle for allowing your customers to trade or sell their copies of works through a digital community.

Numly's Docly.com service provides this type of numeration service for self-publishers automatically. Each published work submitted through Docly is automatically assigned a Numly Number. Every digital work that is purchased also automatically generates another unique Numly Number with the licensee information associated with the Docly account that purchased the copy of digital work. Cool huh?

Numly APIs are available that allow third-party applications to request Numly Numbers dynamically. This means that as the customer requests a download of a digital work a Numly Number can be request and assigned to the customer and embedded in the digital work for tracking purposes. This could be conceived as Good DRM.

Security Monkey writes for ITToolBox on A Day in the Life of an Information Security Investigator. The Chief, a Professional Numly publisher, uses Numly on a regular to copyright his work and track his blog traffic in real-time using the Numly Dashboard reporting feature.

Today, the Chief posted a blog entry entitled, "Look At All Of These Passwords!". To Numly's surprise, the Chief's posting was submitted to Digg and has generated over 50,000 hits to his article so far today. Since Numly tracks content views for all copyright works submitted to Numly, we served up over 50,000 barcode impressions for the Chief today without any impact to our servers or services!

Also because of the Chief's article, Numly picked up another 25 registered members. Good going Chief!

Numly Reaches 1,500 Authors/Artists

Numly, the Web 2.0 copyrighting service, has just registered it's 1,500th member! Not bad for an unfunded startup battling the big guys.

Numly started out as ESBN.ORG in December 2005 and was forced to change its name by RR Bowker (the ISBN.ORG folks) shortly thereafter. Bowker claimed possible trademark infringements of the ISBN.ORG moniker but could not cite any actual instances. Rather than fight the 800 pound gorilla, we changed our name to Numly.

I believe that everything happens for a reason. Numly is a better web 2.0-sounding name and I believe that it differentiates us from Bowker. Numly is more than an enumerator. We assign numbers for each copy of a digital work rather than a number per title. We also timestamp copyright submissions and include digital signatures in our database of each digital work to protect authors/artists against orphan works. This allows us to trace a digital work back to the appropriate copyright holder.

We have also recently launched Docly, a web 2.0 self-publishing site for authors. Submissions generated through Docly automatically bare Numly Numbers with copyright registration as well as social bookmarks and ratings. Authors can also decide whether to share or charge for the viewing of their works. Check out the cool new buddy icons and RSS added to Docly. We'll probably see some of the newer functions on Docly transfer back over to Numly especially since both sites share the same login credentials.

Numly also launched Bookfob several months ago. BookFob allows you to store electronic books (e-books) on a memory stick that can be attached to your key chain. This memory stick can be plugged into any Windows PC to access your book at any time and anywhere. There is no software to install because our user-friendly e-book reader also resides on the BookFob. Best of all, your content is protected from copy/paste, printing, and distribution.

As typical launches go, Docly's was fairly smooth. We ran into IE caching issues and
had to rework the Numly/Docly SSO (single sign-on). We also ran into a few complaints about the original word processing editor and had to make adjustments - once again on the fly. Those pesky apostrophes included in content also caused initial SQL problems on draft documents and published works. All of these bugs appear to have been exterminated!

Users can now go from Numly to Docly or Docly to Numly and draft and publish documents or manage their Numly Numbers.

I would like to thank everyone who assisted in bug detection and testing with us over the past two days. Y'all rock!

Numly Now Does the Two Step

Numly, the Web 2.0 Registrar, now supports Numly Number generation prior to digital asset uploads. This enhancement now allows authors, artists, and musicians to get the ESN in advance and then embed it into their digital works as a licensee registration prior to upload.

Steps:
1) You will need to register your Numly Number via the web portal.
2) Click on Generate ESN and then on Upload Digital Asset.
3) Fill out all of the meta data info on this page but do not select your MP3 file.
4) It will return your Numly Number and at the bottom of the page it will ask you to upload your digital asset.
5) Do so now and it will generate a digital fingerprint for your upload and attach it to your ESN on file.
